Disclaimer
The Watt Book gives general information about energy use, costs and equipment in the home. It is for learning only.
This is not professional advice
Our guides are not electrical, engineering, tax or financial advice. They do not replace a licensed electrician, gas fitter, HVAC technician or other qualified professional who can see your home.
Wiring, electrical panels, gas lines, refrigerant and fuel systems are dangerous. Work on them must be done by a licensed professional, following your local codes and permits. Never connect a generator to your home’s wiring except through a transfer switch or approved interlock fitted by a licensed electrician. Run generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents, and fit carbon monoxide alarms.
Numbers are estimates
Costs, savings and sizes in our guides and calculators are estimates. Your own costs depend on your electricity or fuel rate, your equipment, your home, your climate and how you use energy. Check your bills and your equipment’s labels, and get a professional’s assessment before you buy or install anything.
How our guides are made
Our editor, George McTaggart, reads and approves every guide. Our guides are not fact-checked line by line by hand, and they are not reviewed by an electrician or engineer. Check the cited sources before you act on anything here.
Things change
Prices, rates, product ratings and rules change, and a guide may fall behind. Each guide shows its date. Tax credits, rebates and utility programs are outside what we cover; ask the program or a tax professional.
